I love movies. It's not the action or excitement that thrills me (although it often helps), but the way an imaginary world is brought to life. A pure artistic vision made real. In order to achieve this a team of people needs to share a purpose; a director, writers, cinematographers, actors, prop makers, set builders, editors... all working together under a common purpose. My paintings are a small scale celebration of this process, recreating the mood and feeling of films that have particularly inspired me. I make the props, I build a set, I compose and frame the shot before rendering a classical still life in paint. The Goonies is a movie that I have loved since I was a child. It filled me with hope that every day at the beach would finish with me finding long lost pirate treasure. Because the movie holds such a special place in my heart, I found this piece particularly difficult to compose, discarding tens of compositions before finally settling on one that I felt did my memories justice. The props in this piece are also very special to me as I have desired them for close to thirty years. The key I carefully sculpted in clay before cold casting it in copper. The scales I built from workshop scraps that I sprayed gold, using recent auction photos of the genuine prop as reference, and the pirate skull was modified from a medical casting, drilling out the teeth to match the skull in the movie. These works are created using a traditional oil painting style. Working on canvas board: a grisaille underpainting is completed before coloured oil paints are applied. This traditional process compliments the classical nature of still life works and produces an interesting juxtaposition between the modern content and traditional composition present in my paintings.

Based in Daventry, I live with my beautiful fiance, son and two cats. Much of my time is spent dabbling in my studio, creating art (oil painting, acrylic, watercolour... I love it all!), making curiosities and researching historical art techniques. Painting and creativity have always been a huge part of my life. From early childhood drawing to a keen interest in art at school, I've always wondered how things are made and wanted to recreate them for myself. After completing a degree in Natural History and Scientific Illustration I was lucky enough to work in the rainforests of Indonesia as a scientific expedition artist. This opportunity certainly appealed to my love of painting nature and saw me develop my photorealism skills. With a rise in technological advancements I turned my hand to graphic design and, working in a variety of industries, have seen my digital creations used worldwide. I have continued to paint in my spare time and have a passion for learning new creative skills. My love of films has seen me recreate film props, cinema art and movie posters galore (some of which are available to purchase in my shop!) My artistic interests focus on photorealism and renaissance art (it's a great excuse to travel the world and visit some wonderful galleries). I enjoy researching exactly how the masters created their masterpieces before painting my own versions using authentic techniques and materials.
