About The Artwork
"Hours" is a dark and contemplative painting, featuring hand engraving cutting deeply into and through the wood. The portrait and skull is based on a baroque painting of the Penitent Magdalene, a subject I always find very personally touching because of her touching expressions. In a time period where most portraits were very stoic and calm, the Magdalene was always painted expressively and honestly. Here, the subject is shown contemplating a skull, on the verge of tears.
