About The Artwork
"Jaguar", 2015, acrylic and cut-paper collage on plywood, 24 inches tall by 20 inches wide (60 x 50 cm). Gypsum and washes of acrylic are layered and sanded through several cycles to create a scratched and energetic surface, on which large brushstrokes of strong, warm colors serve as forms. The brushstrokes are themselves layered with colored paper cut into forms mirroring the brushstroke shapes. A scattering of sinuous lines and circles serve to reinforce overall rhythms. The resulting image has the feel of the hieratic and monumental constructions of Central American fresco and bas-relief, while the colors are evocative of tropical fabrics, flowers, and light. Gestural swirls and curves float above the main form, suggesting movement and rhythm within the dark, earthy space. The painting is on lightweight 1/4” plywood, lightly varnished for UV protection and framed in a wood “floater” frame, ready to hang; it is signed and dated both front and back, with title on back.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
