I wasn’t really inspired by the works of old masters reproduced in the albums. They are of course important to me because of the history, the idea, the creative process and their painting technique, but they weren’t the direct motive behind my undertaking the subject of reproduction. To me, the most interesting are the photographs, their process of making, including errors that may appear throughout it. And I mean both developed and digital photographs. there are many factors that influence the final appearance of the picture. The conditions while taking the photo, how it was developed and with regard to digital photos, the display and the print are as important. A photograph carries a piece of information and though it presents the photographed object, it exists independently as a new quality. I find it important to realise that when I look at a photo, e.g. a painting reproduced in the album, I am actually not looking at the painting. I am looking at a completely new creation that differs from the original in every way. Starting with the conditions under which the photo was taken, the light and its temperature, camera parameters, also the way it was printed, type of paper and finally the scale of reproduced work. The very transformation with its mechanical aspects, errors and differences interests me. With reproductions it is particularly and very often noticeable, because when for in- stance I search for specific work online, I always wonder, out of all available versions, which is the most truthful imitation of the original work of art. Often, one reproduction has several copies, a warmer one, cooler, with various contrasts, saturation, sharpness or framing. It is sort of graphic game, in which it is dificult to say, what is closer to the reality. All the values between the real object and its photograph make an interesting problem. The border between the thing represented and the thing itself. The phenomenon of the culture of image, “pictorialness” of the world, it fails to refer us to any being other than itself. A transformation, of which we are often not aware and which we often fail to notice. This artwork is painting, oil on canvas.
