About The Artwork

This art work was sellected for the exhibition THE MAGIC OF ART/ The protagonists of contemporary Slovenian art 1968-2013 and was represented at Villa Manin, Italy and Künstlerhaus in Vienna, Austria. The photo of this art work is also published in the catalog The magic of art / The protagonists of contemporary Slovenian art 1968-2013. In this work colour is present like the natural reflection of the painted canvas outside the painting surface at the paintings back. So, the source of colour isn′t any electric source. It happens naturally like a reflection on the wall. I′m researcing this phaenomen more than a decade. A non-material reflection on the wall appears as a reflection of the painted object. And in daylight it changes all the time. You are kindly invited to see a video of that process on my homepage http://www.otorimele.com/en/video-1/. My painting compositions could also be called “generators of light” or “catchers of light”. By saying that I am a “painter of the light” I want to emphasize that for my expression and communication with the observer I do not need the material world because my fundamental topic - the painting motif - is the light itself. And the role of the light is to trigger in the observer the ability to activate the non-material. My painting image plastically generates the color and the light. It could also be said that it reflects the light, or that the color appears in the form of a shadow. Barbara Savenc: “Spatial compositions affect us as the mysterious puzzles, with unsaid or undetermined in the artistic work, which only becomes complete and whole in the eyes of the beholder. They pull the viewer into their intimacy, into their space, while, with their monochromaticity and as a dematerialized source of light energy – they remain undeterminable in their universal meaning and emotion. In each new layout, a new interdependence, they appear to be as beneficial oases, hushed islands, and each painting and object seem as a monadnock in the noise of the world, flutter of the countless applications, informational redundancies. Oto Rimele encourages us to the transition into his own inner self.” Links:

Oto Rimele is a painter, visual artist and author of visual spatial settings. He expresses himself with pure form and colour. Currently, he is Full Professor for drawing and painting at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. In 2004 he received the Prešeren Fund Award, the highest recognition for achievements in the field of art in the Republic of Slovenia. As regards construction, his images are created is such a way as to enable radiation of colour light. The images are accurately placed into the space of the exposition area and achieve the creation of non-material colour communication: his images-objects enable the light of the space to pass into the light of the image, the silence and the inner sound of the image. Rimele strives to achieve such a state of the visual image that will establish, in the interaction with the spectator and the space, the state of wholeness: the artistic image is here in order for the spectator to be able to become aware of himself again and enter the dimension of his non-materiality. His work could be described as “sacral minimalism” and corresponds, as regards the content, to the European spiritual tradition and contemporary authors such as Anish Kapoor, James Turell, Bill Viola, Arvo Pärt. Additional information on the author and his work in English can be found at the website www.otorimele.com.
