About The Artwork

Painting: Mix-media on Wood https://alvarogonzalezmontenegro.wordpress.com Ready to hang, it´s varnished and framed https://www.saatchiart.com/alvarogonzalezmontenegro ALVARO GONZALEZ MONTENEGRO (Saatchi Art) This website shows my most recents artworks. The English controlled the commerce, the industries and the financial activity of great part of Chile during the second half of century XIX and the first decades of the XX. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the new Republic of Chile declared free trade, which captivated hundreds of Britons who a posteriori came to enrich our country. The great majority were merchants or representatives of British trading houses that settled in the main ports of the country and quickly appropriated foreign trade and the most dynamic areas of the economy. Thus emerged a prosperous British community in the port of Valparaiso, in the northern nitrate and in Magallanes. Other groups settled in Santiago and Concepción. According to census data in 1854 there were two thousand Britons in Chile and more than ten thousand at the beginning of the 20th century. Although reduced in number, their influence as economic and commercial elite placed them in a privileged position in the country. This series of paintings on wood, made with colored soil on photoimpressions, are painting interventions by the British artist Thomas Somerscales, who was an Englishman famous for his paintings of naval battles, made during his stay in Chile from 1869 to 1892. He certainly painted some of the most important battles in the history of Chile, those that were produced and driven solely by the interests of some of their compatriots. Currently his paintings are the best evaluated within the local artists of the twentieth century without being, in my opinion, a painter remarkable for his creative genius, less for being a critical eye on the events that took place. The series is called Somerscales: Topography in Ruin by the descriptive and representational technique of the plane used by the painter, which intervened, with soil and latex paint, to form images of the landscape as a ruin.

I have a degree in visual arts from the Catholic University of Chile. My work focuses on the relationship between the human being and nature; in the distance that has been generated between these by the conditioning exerted by contemporary life. Distance that is directly proportional to the socioeconomic situation of each subject. In this way, my research addresses concepts such as segregation, overcrowding, memory and power, guiding my work towards my political, ethical and aesthetic concerns, often from the relationship of the person with the landscape and the limits proposed by the capital among them. I believe that the link to the landscape in my work is a pretext, which is very useful to unite the origin of the concept and its historical development, with what is currently required: Contribute to the quality of people's life framework and maintain the character of the places. And, from this, I propose these landscapes denote the great differences that exist between social classes, always invisible and confusing. Differences of fundamental order, since the great thinkers of our history believed that the human world is inherent to the locus amoenus, so it proposes an inequality, in addition to material, spiritual. I want to suggest, with works that aspire to reality for the truths that history and non-history provide, the development of entangled social problems and, as in science, according to Paul Dirac's definition, "take complicated concepts and try to make them easy "; Make understandable issues that for lack of symbolism and historical elaboration, certainly, lack importance in favour of a economic model, being in my opinion a fundamental background for the restoration of a Latin American identity.
