This painting is part of my Subway Sonnet series and created with oil, paper on canvas. It is all sealed with a UV protective gloss varnish and ready to hang.

"The world breaks everyone and afterwards many are strong at the broken places” - Ernest Hemingway...
.
When we think of Hercules we always think of strength but when the Oracle of Apollo told Hercules that he must be a slave for three years to a barbarian woman, Queen Omphale of Lydia, all his power was stripped away when she took his clothes and forced him to labor for her dressed as a woman....

However, Omphale ultimately fell in love with Hercules, they became lovers, and after his three years of servitude was complete, they married and had two children together....

Another pictorial reference in my painting "Subway Sonnet #7 - On Strength" are the Twin Towers. NYC was physically and emotionally broken but grew stronger together through the many acts of recovery and reconstruction that I witnessed as a proud daughter of this eternal city.
