The Indoor Jungle: Large Floral Still Life with Painterly Vases Painting

This very large still life (40 inches by 40 inches) is a big, dramatic piece executed in vibrant pink, orange, green and blue gouache paint on cradled board. It features a veritable jungle of flowers in a collection of sweet and whimsical vases featuring quirky designs. A friendship palm grows joyously out of an antique italian pot featuring a blue and white dancing deer design, a glass vase wrapped in rattan weaving hosts a bouquet of proteas, birds of paradise and monstera leaves in wonderful rich cranberry, orange, poppy and emerald tones. A pink pitcher features a green knysna loerie or turaco bird - which my friend's four-year-old son called "a weird parrot" quite appropriately just last week, this jug also hosts a spray of vibrant orange lilies with lovely indigo speckled petals. A flamingo decorated pot holds a bouquet of deep pink proteas and a spray of grey green eucalyptus leaves while a small delft pitcher with a windmill design fails utterly at its attempts to keep a pretty spray of mimosa or acacia flowers in line. This piece features so many of the plants that I grew up loving in South Africa, many of whom also feature in the Australian landscape, and so it feels like an interesting thing - to have these rather wonderful wild elements framed in this collection of domestic containers. It is a bit like housing the jungle for just a fleeting moment. The navy tablecloth with its riot of leaves overlapping one another further emphasizes the deep, jungle feel of the piece as do the hot tones - peachy pinks in the background and vibrant oranges and pinks in the petals. This painting is big, and vibrant and features wonderful paint textures and patterning and would really bring any space to life.
