As an artist I use photography as a means to record, reveal and explore the domestic space and the ideas of the everyday. This approach stems from my own fascination with surface and the often overlooked or unnoticed , and is continually considered throughout my artistic practice. little others is a recent body of work and can be considered a continuation of this fascination. Drawing on the theories of abjection and abstraction, I have turned my attention to the subject of the fragility of skin. Using a variety of banal and bodily fluids, held precariously within small pieces of ripped, plastic food wrap, I consider the breakdown of bodily boundaries and how this breakdown has the potential to signify a shift from clean to unclean, and therefore contamination. Using food wrap as a substitute skin/membrane I constructed small temporary sculptures for these photographic compositions. Each sculpture consists of one fluid held in a state of potential collapse, with the fluid slowly seeping from its protective skin. I employ a variety of methods to create these sculptures, includes moulding and shaping them with my fingers, chewing them and ripping and tearing the thin membrane with my teeth. Although created to consider fragility of bodily boundaries, the abstract nature of the resulting images, allow the work to possess a pareidolia quality. This quality allows the viewer to consider the work beyond its original context and to project his or her own interpretation upon the individual images. As an artist I use photography as a means to consider the abject in relation to our physical body and the fluids contained within it. I am fascinated with the exploration of the boundaries of our bodies and how the disintegration of these boundaries can result in both actual, and perceived, contamination.
