About The Artwork

In 2016, I traveled to Iceland to photograph its glaciers caves. After witnessing the disappearance of an entire glacier on a Bolivian mountain range in a period of less than 25 years (image 0176-10 present some weeks ago) I can strongly affirm that Global Warming is real. I felt dismal when I found out that the glaciers in this latitude are having a similar fate. The average glacier retreat in Breiðamerkurjökull during the last decades went from 30-50 meters per year. Never the less, from a satellite image taken in 2012, I saw the glacier tongue retreated in more than 790 meters in a period of 4 years. It is definitely a much larger average per year, which clearly predicts a not so auspicious future. Holes in glaciers are produced by a combination of factors: the internal rivers that are constantly bathing the ice, and the mossy stones that fall from nearby mountains. The heat absorbed by the rock, starts melting the ice around it, making holes like the one on the center of this image. As the glacier advances, some ice blocks change position and you can find horizontal holes instead of vertical. In the image you can also see a large amount of small pebbles that are carried by the wind, which are increasing the ice melting. Sadly, as with the glacier retreat, my Rollei 6006 camera that accompanied me for more that 33 years after taking few images to this one, due to the cold weather, the mirror lift was blocked and as the motor advanced it destroyed the entire pulley mechanism, saying goodbye for good. Unframed, Chromogenic paper: C-flex-Poly-based paper high-gloss or C-Metallic- Kodak Ultra Endura poly-based glossy finish. Limited edition print 1/5, signed certificate.

Artist Statement I am a passionate photographer, blessed with curious eyes that are constantly amazed by the forms and designs produced by water, and the combination of its temperature and light. No matter how many pictures I take of the same shot, every time I witness a very different expression. My camera and I have been traveling around the world since 1977, registering its shapes and essence, which I have been sharing through large prints, as an homage to its abundance, fragility, and essential existence; trying to convey the feeling I had at the time of the capture, registering most of the time in color and sometimes in monochrome. History It was late 1955 when my eyes peeped at the city of La Paz near the high Andes. Since then, they have learned by capturing sparkles of light. Started at the age of 10 with oil painting and playing in darkroom (full equipment I discovered in my home basement), later taking pictures of what my eyes noticed. Took as much photography courses as I could. Still continue learning and testing/using new digital tools. The influence of Ansel Adams and Vincent Van Gogh work has forged my technique to pursue the chase of Water and capture its beauty, creating a large portfolio during my visits to more than 40 countries. Living in 10 of them and settled at the small town of Calera de Tango in Chile. My work was done using a medium format film camera, and currently with a digital camera. I try to capture the beauty of water in all its forms; denouncing many times the little interest that our civilized world invests in its conservation and preservation. Printing mainly on large size fine art photographic paper, in Color as well as Black & White. The passion of portraying water was funded by me, as well as most of the exhibits I made, except for a few that Sony Chile provided equipment and funding for printing and framing. Water, an important resource, source of life, and protagonist of my exhibitions around the world, that converge between the look of the paused movement, preserving it for future generations, as is the case of certain images that I took at a glacier that has disappeared in less than 20 years.
