About The Artwork

An archival pigment print image size 14 3/4" x 19" on 17x22" Canson Rag Photographique paper Print #1 of Edition I of 25 prints + 2 A/P 17"x22" archival pigment prints A colorized image from a drum scanned 4x5" B&W film negative Who knows where these things come from -- I am just grateful they occasionally fall out of the sky and land on my head. My daily bike ride through Venice, California yielded a worn little sign. I took it home and hung it on my wall -- a nice wall not free of blemishes but color neutral to help with color judgement. I hung it high on the wall because it spelled out "high". But then I imagined maybe the letters started out a little more anonymous, raw and unformed until they started talking stuff and roistering about. Transforming themselves -- something maybe not too far from the dry sophistication of a New Yorker cartoon. Printed on heavy Rag Photographique paper, with the caption inscribed in pencil below the image. This is a matte surface paper that lends itself to an image that might have some graphic departure in its nature. It also has the wonderful virtue of enough tooth to its surface to allow writing on it with a pencil This photograph is not framed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
