About The Artwork

In my grandmother's home in Nishapur, a large-scale painting with a bulky wooden frame captivated my childhood imagination. Commissioned by my eldest uncle from local painter Mohammad Mehdi Akhbari, the painting portrays a dramatic war scene. A young woman, in an act of desperation and sacrifice, cuts her hair to dress a wounded soldier's injury, believing her hair possesses life-saving magic. Beside them, another soldier kneels, with two horses, one white and one brown, standing vigil. This painting, more than just a depiction of sacrifice, symbolized life and humanity to me. As a child, resting with my head on my knees, I saw in the woman's action the very essence of living. Akhbari's art, a testament to the power of sacrifice, remains a constant in my grandmother's house, surviving even an earthquake that left a stark crack on the wall. Over the years, I've often gazed at it, pondering the fate of these captured souls, wondering if it's not just them, but my own childhood, that remains ensnared within that frame. ©Golnaz Jamsheed (2015).
