Rashpal Gurm is a commercial advertising photographer and creative retoucher from Reading, United Kingdom. He holds a BA in commercial photography from Arts University, Bournemouth and has exhibited at both the Commercial Drop Project, Bournemouth and the Candid Arts Trust, London. Returning from a seven year hiatus from creative photography, Gurm’s photographs intend to explore the juxtaposition of science and art. Forging exploration into both colour and movement, Gurm utilises in-studio liquid-based photography to focus and enhance hues, experiment with motion and produce aesthetically pleasing whilst visually challenging artworks. Combining an eclectic working history, Gurm had developed a unique visual style which culminates in a breath-taking oeuvre that simultaneously investigates scientific and abstract concepts. Abyss & Inferno, Rashpal Gurm’s recent body of work, is a series of ink in water photographs that emerge from a deep and considered exploration into beauty and fluidity. Initially conceived in 2013, they are a result of liminal studies formed through ink droplets being placed into, and then diluting within, Perspex tanks filled with water. Noting a stark break from the straightforward, commercial photography which Gurm has been previously focused, Abyss & Inferno provides a viewpoint into the creative mind of the artist. Taking inspiration from lauded photographers such as Luka Klikovac, a Serbian fine-artist who shares similar explorations into colour, movement and liquid, Abyss & Inferno offers visually captivating and aesthetically stunning images which examine form, colour, motion and speed. With ultra-resolution detailing and an array of colorations capable of evoking a range of visual pairings from spewing magma over an active volcano through to moss-laden hills of the Scottish Highlands, they effectively fluctuate between art and science in a unique and inspiring manner.
