Ever since boyhood, I've always been fascinated by aloes. More so the striking species depicted here - Aloe marlothii, which sometimes can reach 6 meters in height. To me they resemble soldiers standing at attention and keeping watch on the rocky slopes of mountain passes. This magnificent specimen grows on the crest of Spioenkop mountain in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The view beyond is towards the Drakensberg mountain range in the West. As in most of my landscape images, my inspiration by the romantic paintings of Constable and Turner, influenced my depiction of this landscape too. I was fortunate to have been in this location just in time to capture an approaching storm in the background. When I photographed this scene, the tragic loss of young lives on that hill was very much on my mind. More than 300 soldiers died on the crest of Spioenkop in January 1900, during a very brutal battle that was mostly fought at very close quarters. To me, this majestic, living aloe is a more fitting tribute to the fallen soldiers than the whitewashed mass graves and stone monuments. This artwork is available as a pigment ink print on museum quality archival fine art paper, printed to the highest professional standard. Jan qualified as a graphic designer and filmmaker from the Pretoria Technikon and is in the process of completing a Masters degree at the University of Cape Town. Being raised on a farm in the middle of South Africa instilled a great love of nature, as well as a passion for exploration and learning in him. Together with a desire to create stunning images, he was inspired to venture further afield - to 50 countries across the globe, from the natural paradise of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, to war torn in Kabul, Afghanistan, whilst working as a freelance documentary cameraman for broadcasters such as National Geographic Television, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, CNN and the BBC. This has given him a rare glimpse into the lives and cultural practices of many different people and an insight into the environmental challenges that we, as a civilization, face. His work is informed by a wide range of interests - from Natural Science to History, Music, Journalism, Film and Art. Jan is inspired by the Dutch and Flemish Masters' use of light and by fellow artists like Obie Oberholzer, Nick Brandt, Alejandro Chaskielberg and David Goldblatt.
