About The Artwork

Crocosmia, also known as montbretia, is a small genus of flowering plants in the iris family. It is native to the grasslands of southern and eastern Africa, ranging from South Africa to Sudan, but has naturalised widely, including in my garden. It is a popular garden flower, and is sold in garden centres all over the country -- but it is listed as a Schedule 9 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and it is an offence to plant or allow to spread into the wild as it will quickly take over habitats. The corms form in vertical chains with the youngest at the top and oldest and largest buried most deeply in the soil.
