About The Artwork

A recreation of the Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne. Apollo, the sun God, desired the nymph Daphne. She did not return his love and pleaded to the river to escape from him. The moment where he captures her is when she turns into a tree. This story has been famously sculpted by Bernini in the 16th century. My recreation shows a shadowy image of the male hand grabbing the female wrist, with the plants positioned to look like part of her. Cyanotype is an old form of camera-less photography. Iron salts are used to sensitise paper which, when exposed to the sun and fixed with water, turns a Prussian blue colour. I love this art form where nature and the sun can be used so simply. Apollo and Daphne is the first myth I have created in this medium - the perfect union of the Sun God, the River and the Tree.

Judith Tutin is an Irish-born artist living in Cornwall, UK. She works in oil painting and cyanotype photography. Judith's work explores abstract and semi-abstract representations of light sources, spiritual experiences and nature's effect on surfaces. Strongly influenced by Italian Catholic art history and 20th century colour field painting, Judith creates elemental textures, ethereal light and a sense of the eternal in her work.
