About The Artwork

The original to this my first piece of paper sculpture measures 40"X30" X3" approximately unframed, and was inspired by the artist John James Audubon. I have always admired his skill and lifelong persistence in producing in the region of 420 works. As with all paper sculpture each piece / feather is accurately cut from the individuals preferred type of material. It is then moulded by hand using simple tools. Glued and places in position. There is considerable planning in the initial stages of these pieces. The piece as a whole is made by breaking it down an working on separate pieces, such as wings, legs, feet and so on. These are then assembled onto a background, working from the bottom layers up, on which the completed artwork will sit. In this instance, three types of paper were used in it's creation - an acrylic off white, a cream and a white cartridge. In this digital representation of the original paper sculpture I have enhance the basic whites and creams of the papers to give the best results for the digital printing process. Whilst working on these sculpture projects, I was also inspired by two artists who work in totally different ways, though I consider are among the top artists producing paper sculpture, these are, Jeff Nishinaka and Calvin Nicolls.
