The once-efficient and orderly flow of autonomous vehicles has given way to a surreal scene of vehicular congestion. Countless automobiles are trapped in an intricate maze of streets and highways, their LED headlights casting an otherworldly glow upon the asphalt below. The gridlock is so extensive that it seems as though the city has momentarily frozen in time. As you continue to observe this captivating scene, you can't help but wonder what went wrong and how this mesmerizing, yet surreal, snapshot of modern life will eventually be resolved. The subject for this photo was the inside of a 2010 Apple MacBook Pro. The photo was taken by a medium format Hasselblad digital camera and then subtly modified in post-production to appear like a city at night. A large scale version of this photograph was publicly exhibited at the City of Ottawa's Corridor 45|75 gallery. The limited edition photo was printed on high-end 17" x 22" Hahnemühle archival paper and includes a white border around the image. It has been signed and numbered by the artist, and includes a certificate of authentication.

Christopher Schmitt is a lens-based artist residing in Ottawa, on unceded Anishinaabe territory. His work explores disruptive technologies and the impact they have on the networks of our minds, and on our land. Schmitt’s work examines the idea that perhaps this dark side is not a mirror reflection of our society, but rather a new world entirely. His work helps viewers navigate between abstraction and reality, providing visual clues to this uncertain virtual landscape. Schmitt was the recipient of a City of Ottawa Creation and Production Grant in 2022, an Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance Grant in 2023. His photographs have been published in PhotoEd (Spring/Summer 2022, Winter 2023), Do It For the Grain, Ottawa Private Art Label (OPAL), and have been purchased by the City of Ottawa.
