About The Artwork

“Awakening: Self-Portrait ” is part of my larger series of photographs: “Talking Backwards.” The title of the series is inspired by a line from the song “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane; a song which begs its listener to think and feel for themselves. My series “Talking Backwards” seeks to breathe magic, wonder, and a bit of the absurd into everyday, mundane objects. There’s often a breakdown of logic and proportion (“White Rabbit” again) in these artworks. This breakdown of the “acceptable” and the “sensical” into something we are taught should not exist is symbolic to me of the need to peel back the layers of society’s “truths” - truths that usually teach us to believe that we are not enough, that we are not each unique and special - to find ourselves. And once we find ourselves we can see that nothing has ever been quite what it seems; including us. We are each of us something far greater than we have been lead to believe, and there is immense beauty and wonder in that. Beauty that I can only scratch the surface of conveying in these photos. “Awakening: Self-Portrait” is one of the artist’s few self-portraits; the photo taken in a poorly lit room, on a vintage green velvet footstool - the light stars, nebulas, and galactic clouds added digitally post-production. The focus is on divine feminine power; and through simplicity of setup the artist’s own energy and power takes centerstage. Take everything society has lead you to believe about yourself and the world - peel back the layers, rearrange them, flip everything on its head, turn it inside out, and maybe you’ll see things as they truly are. Seek and find your own truth. Life flows from us: the world is literally what we create it. * This is the 2nd print in a Limited Edition artist’s printing of 12. *Printed Full-Bleed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl. * Photograph is signed and numbered on the bottom right and comes with a certificate of authenticity. * Ships flat in a sturdy box.

Rachel Jones is a NYC based photographer. Her photo series "Life Beneath Other Stars” is a sort of waking fever dream; her vision of this world exactly as it is here and now, except: in some other time... in some other space... under the light of some other type of star. A sort of hyper-realistic surrealism (forgive the oxymoron); if we can envision it, then somewhere it exists. Her photos demonstrate how a simple manipulation of light and color can change our perspective; and where we change our perspective we can turn fear into love, darkness into light, and “ugliness” into a thing of beauty. Perhaps, under the light of some other star - or in some other universe - our ugly, mundane brown buildings dappled with pale light can exist as a riot of color against a backdrop of lemonade skies. Sometimes if we get playful with the light it can open our eyes to unseen details; to the beauty in what we, in the darkness, were only capable of perceiving as flaws. Rachel painstakingly manipulates the light and color in her photographs after the image has been captured. No physical elements of the image are ever added or taken away (except for compositional cropping), nor are any filters ever used. This can create beautiful layers of pixelated sky; showcase the triviality of skin color and the oneness of humanity; and reveal auras of light around buildings and objects, and unexpected contrasts. Part 1 of the "Life Beneath Other Stars' series is shot in New York City, with a continuation of the series to be shot internationally planned for 2022. Enjoy your new view.
