About The Artwork

Bacamarte - Local culture in the Northeast of Brazil - Inspired by the legendary canguaceiros Lampião and Maria Bonita Lampião (1897-1938) was the most famous Brazilian cangaceiro, called "King of Cangaço", he was in charge committing crimes motivated by revenge, revolt and land dispute, spreading the fear wherever he went. Virgulino Ferreira da Silva (1897-1938), known as Lampião, was born in the town of Serra Talhada, Sertão de Pernambuco, on July 7, 1897, in a family of farmers and breeders. He was the third child of a family of seven, he could read and write. He helped out on his father's little farm by tending the animals. The cangaço attracted him, in 1915, after his family was accused of stealing some animals from his neighbor's farm, the Saturnino family, linked to the oligarchy. After some time, the Ferreira brothers killed some of the cattle of the neighbor and were persecuted by the police. In the race, his mother did not resist and the police killed his father. Virgulino ordered a brother to take care of his younger brothers and, with the two elders, he passed through the northeastern states, doing justice with his own hands. The first attack was in 1922, in Alagoas, in the house of the baroness of the city of White Water, where it took all the money that found. The band of vigilantes invaded the farms, plundered the merchants, and distributed a portion of what they collected with the poor. Five states were part of his wanderings. Wherever he passed, he tortured and killed, leaving a trail of destruction and cruelty. On August 1, 1923, the troop suffered its first ambush in the municipality of Nazaré do Pico, in Pernambuco. Fighting took place in the square with the help of Nazarene civilians. It was the beginning of the Force of Nazareth, the most important pursuer of Lampião. In 1926, being in Juazeiro, in Ceará, Lampião is called to fight in the Column Prestes and receives the patent of captain. At that time, he visited Father Cicero. Two years later, Lampião crosses the São Francisco river towards Sergipe and Bahia and has the first combat with the Bahian forces. In 1929, in his wanderings in the region, he arrived in the village of Malhado da Caiçara when he met Maria Gomes de Oliveira, who was 19 years old and lived with her parents after separating from her husband. Soon, Maria entered the cangaço and became the famous companion of Lampião. With the name of "Maria Bonita" became the first woman to enter the cangaço. In 1932 Maria Expedita de Oliveira Ferreira Nunes, daughter of the couple was born. During the years of the cangaço, Lampião made fun of the police, the government and the influential people. He escaped easily from ambushes, from shootings and from traps. He managed to fool the cops, which he called monkeys, using various strategies. One was to have the pack put the espadrilles upside down to leave the trail in the opposite direction. He was feared and loved. Lampião created clothes for himself and the pack, caprichava in the details, wore medals, many rings, gold chains, leather hat, embroidered saddlebags and silver daggers. Lampião wore clothes similar to the military battalions and glasses that characterized him. His first photograph is dated 1926. His nickname is said to have come from the color of the barrel of his rifle, which burned after several shots, looking like a flashlight. At dawn on July 28, 1938, in Grota de Angico, in the village of Poço Redondo, in Sergipe, Lampião and his band were surprised by gusts of machine guns. Minutes later, Lampião, Maria Bonita and 9 other cangaceiros died. The attack commanded by Lieutenant João Bezerra was successful, which the Northeast police pursued for a long time. Their heads were decapitated, mummified and exhibited in Santana do Ipanema, Alagoas. They were then taken to the Nina Rodrigues Museum in Bahia until they were buried in 1968. Lampião died in the Grota de Angico, at Poço Redondo, Sergipe, on July 28, 1938.
