Baki in the North: Pause on four legs Photograph

I visited Jigawa, Northern Nigeria, mid 2018 for my National youth service. It was far from home and I was expected to stay for a year in a land were I barely knew anyone talk more of speaking their language. PS: According to my sources, “Baki” means “foreigner or stranger”, in Hausa (Northern-Nigerian language). At the time, I felt withdrawn from society and moving to the North as a Lagosian required a lot of adjusting. “Pause on four legs” shows how firewood for cooking is transported around the nomadic town of Fanisau. Advanced modes of transport exist but the people choose to multi-task with their cattle. The scene in this image reflected the my mental situation at the time; progressing with life when a sudden pause comes and keeps you still enough to offload your burdens which fuel your road to being better. A “pause” might take longer than expected, but we must try to make the most of it whilst pushing forward. Black and white images add intensity to any image and the choice of having the works printed on metal sheets is for a better feel and experience.
