About The Artwork

This diptych features a series of 46 black and white pinhole photographs taken with the artist's handmade pinhole camera and traditionally processed, digitalized, transferred to aluminum plates, and hand-sewn to a traditionally stretched canvas backing. This collection of photographs made its debut public appearance in a special ephemeral format at the world-renowned ArtPrize Seven in Grand Rapids, Michigan in a special debut format: https://www.artprize.org/62531 This series provides a glimpse into the story of Michigan's historic Grand Traverse Commons - formerly known as the Northern Michigan Asylum during its initial days as the state hospital - and the extraordinary transformations occurring during its current restoration. The artist made a pinhole camera specifically to capture this series. Pinhole photography is the medium of choice for its ability to evoke a sense of mystery and a certain timelessness that suggests hazy boundaries between the old-world past, established present, and future of potentiality of the this significant place and time. With its majestic Victorian Italianate architecture and over 100 acres of farms and nature, the Traverse City State Hospital opened in 1885 operating under the Kirkbride philosophy, “beauty is therapy”. Changing healthcare laws led to its close, decay, and threats of demolition. In 1993, a group of visionaries began transforming the vast network of buildings and land into The Village, a mixed-use residential and commercial community. The result is a modern masterpiece that honors its original brilliant vision via preservation. The project's growing success is inspiring future projects involving restoration, adaptive reuse, and renewed purpose. This work is sold as a diptych and comes with the artist's signed Certificate of Authenticity. Measurements given are for the overall size of the two panels. Each panel measures 36 inches wide by 48 inches tall by 2 inches deep.
