About The Artwork
Badly damaged in a storm, the furthest seaward end of this pier had been closed off for a number of years. I had tried a number of images of the wider structure including the more evidently damaged or derelict sections but wasn't satisfied. It was only when I returned to taking images of the surface boardwalk that it became evident that it was not 'what you could see' that was the subject but rather 'what you could not see', ie the people. This was a space built for and normally inhabited by crowds of happy holiday makers and families. The title references a just-visible detail on the signage, the nature of a pier and also underlines the 'end of times' for the pier's existence.
