About The Artwork

At the base of the Cascade mountains in Central Oregon is a spring that gushes the purist of waters from the side of a hill. It rolls onto rocks and becomes one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. The Metolious river. It is a spiritual place with wonders revealing themselves at every footstep. Casual travelers will miss most of the beauty of this place. For those willing to take the time to see and understand, listen and hear, and smell and taste, the river and it's forest and Meadows will reveal itself. All of the wonders of the lifecycle will touch your soul. I have hiked around this river for over a decade, blessed to live near it. My images are special to me, and if you understand the simplicity and yet complexity of the image, you will see movement, texture, color, light, and composition that makes sense of what most people might walk by, paying no attention. Each of these prints are special jewels, and offered in a very limited edition of just 1 of 20. Under proper lighting, these images reveal their richness and brilliance. They are produced, handled, and mounted with museum quality and archival standards. "Bramble" is such an important image to me. It perfectly expresses the Metolious region and it's melding of species and lifecycles. It was captured in mid Autumn when the light is soft, yet brilliant in color, and typical of one of the special vignettes--natures composition, as imagined by an artist who loves this place. This image is 14 inches in width, and approximately 11 inches in height, mounted on a 4 ply acid free base, hand signed and numbered in an edition of just 20 special prints.

Axel has been photographing since age 7. His first camera was a square format Kodak Instamatic which formed a special bond to his seeing the world through a square format. By age 12 he built his first darkroom where he spent hours developing and printing black and white and color film. He perfected a technique of stand development which he used in nearly all of the tend of thousands of images he took. He bought a YashicaMat camera in high school so he could work with a larger film format, and loved taking images of anyone who would pose for him. A couple years later the Portland Art Museum selected an image of a homeless man for an exhibition. Shortly after the exhibit opened, he was offered a job working with Hasselblads camera, and his career was off and running. He has authored five books, and is known in the photography community for his book, "Iridescent Light, The Art of Stand Development." It was adopted as the go to guide for the development process he had perfected since childhood. Axel is also a painter, sculptor, poet and opera singer. He lives in Sisters, Oregon.
