About The Artwork

Casus Nietzsche series. On the use and abuse of history for life. Limited edition print #1 of 20. Plaque mounted print Made in Collaboration with Vitaly Korneev https://sophievital.wordpress.com “On the Use and Abuse of History for Life” is the title taken by Nietzsche for one of the books that is included in “Untimely Meditations”. We have dedicated our work to relations between a child and the history. Of course, our model’s thinking about the history is untimely because it’s not a child’s business to think about history. On the other hand, the mechanism of history continues to work, the clock is ticking seconds out relentlessly, life has been stoned in the history and the past always comes back to press the present down. On one hand, the history is committed to preserve a meaning, a sense of the past in mediating life with words, and the word always “dries” life out. But, on the other hand, the history is still setting benchmarks, network concepts, which can determine one’s place in the social space. Immobility of the social space provides a stable orientation. Living a life is beyond description and breaks the boundaries of words, opens up new horizons, but also brings the ship of human destiny into the unknown. Does a young life need the history or the history arises simultaneously with age? This contradiction is comprehended in our work entitled “On the Use and Abuse of History for Life”. The pose of the girl reminds of figures on friezes of ancient buildings, perhaps dancing ones, perhaps this movement is an application of force, as in sports. Position of models’ hands can be interpreted as a reminiscence of the ancient statue of a discus thrower or a javelin thrower. The movement was frozen at the beginning, the weight is transferred to the left foot, but no more further development, a moment comes to a standstill in its onset and is not yet complete. Black and white image makes the model less personalized, giving a feeling of out-of-temporality to the image and putting the present in the context of history. At the same time, the background pattern and color give the feeling of lightness. Intersecting geometric shapes reminiscent of the measuring instrument a sextant, an old device for determining the geographical coordinates by the position of celestial bodies over the horizon, often used on sailing ships. Learned history represents only known space and says nothing about the challenges of new times. A young girl is moving in the ocean of history always at random, hoping for the accuracy of the instrument and the immobility of the stars-landmarks. Are the currents to intervene in human calculations and where will that ship go?

Everyone can press the camera's shutter button and take a picture, but does that mean that now we are able to better express our view on the world? Although it is assumed that the photo can correctly display three-dimensional world, it can not, and every photographer knows that the point of shooting, along with lighting, determines how the photo will look. Simple changing of focus' depth changes perception. The point of view travelling in three dimensions gives a lot of possibilities from which some one only realizes in a photograph. Throughout its history, painting has developed a lot of two-dimensional illusion of three-dimensionality, but none of them is not final. You can always go beyond what was suggested yesterday. Plane has its own graphic will and its demands to the painting. We are moving from photography to painting, developing new parallel ways of understanding the three-dimensional world in applying it onto a two-dimensional surface. Artistic field that we study is how to conclude a photographic image within the two-dimensional pictorial object. We consider photography as a starting point and premise work to change perceptions. Photography is only a starting point for changing the spatial structures which break down into simple planar components and then continue to change under the influence of different visual techniques. http://sophievital.wordpress.com/
