Cat’s in the Cradle, by Harry Chapin, gave me a sense of peace regarding the relationship with Dad. Although, we lived far away and not many of the aspects of the song applied to us, it was the idea missing the daily events in each other’s lives appeared more likely than not. The desire to be as close as possible considering the 1700 mile distance became the objective. The image of a Rose and Rose Bud near Dad’s back door I immediately felt the relationship between Dad and Son. At the time of this photo (10 20 2017), Ryan, Dad’s grandson had been dead six weeks. I was at Dad’s because as he lay up in a hospital bed unable to breathe due to the impending lung cancer diagnosis, I was to photograph his residence as part of the rehabilitation he was to undergo. The image fit so well with the last coherent conversation Dad and I a kind of chicken/egg thing. Contemplating who actually molds a parent, our parents, or as I was considering our children. Simply put (non-artese), the Rose and the Rose Bud symbolize the adult and the child, the child will eventually grow similarly to an adult. When Ryan was born I had his whole life mapped out for him as he lay in the baby bucket at the hospital. At the age of 14 I learned there were several maps for Ryan and mine was not the one he chose to follow. The plan had to change as did the methods I used to parent. As the children adapted to their transitions to adulthood, I adapted techniques and beliefs to objectively listen and advise I know as a son, Dad too, had to change his beliefs to maintain our relationship. Yet, he never gave me bad advice. There was a third rose, on the bush, it of course had dried and was wanting to fall off. I photograph many flowering plants reflecting this life cycle. However, since I viewed this as father and son, my son had died and my father will soon, yet there will always be more fathers and sons. The image is not about the cycle of life, but of life itself. Roses represent the intricacies and fragility of humans.

Paul Shefferly M.F.A. IT’S JUST DAMN FUN I have fun, making art has always been fun for me. If it’s working in the darkroom, shooting or finishing frames I have a lot of fun. I don’t really consider myself an artist I view myself as a creative problem solver. I see challenges everywhere I go and think to myself how I would change it. I took a lighting class in graduate school and have been in love with light ever since. Light is all around us all the time, with the exception of a light proof room or box and how it plays with us intrigues me. I will sit in one location for hours watching the light change the environment around me. I will figure out a way to capture what I want you to see about the light. I love to see what other people create. When the mid is clear of our countless obstructions we can really see the splendor of the world around us. It’s a gift, watch a child intrigued with a plain brown card board box, they are living the gift. My background is so incredibly diverse I am content doing just about anything, but my passions are photography, photo editing, refinishing frames and serial killers. I was trained as a Psychological Profiler back in the 1980’s when it was considered “Voodoo” and witchcraft police work. Not the prominence it has today. One of my first profiles got me a suspect right off the bat, his family hired an attorney who told the department I was crazy and if I didn’t back off they would take legal action. The suspect moved on to another school and unfortunately was successful at hurting someone. Oh well. I wrote a final in art history profiling the artist using his work as a crime scene. Again, I’m crazy. The world is too caught up in convention and so afraid to try on those new shoes.
