There is a great dilemma in the representation of places which were never meant to be depicted, whether it be through writing, painting, or photography. Native America in its grandeur and mystery shatters the traditional east vs west dichotomy, leaving us with a sense of humility when faced with the futility of our own creative matrix. The "creativity" found within ancient Puebloan culture is inextricably tied to everyday life -- from their sandstone architecture to the mystery plays of their descendants. Even the pictographs found throughout the Four Corners region were meant to serve as a didactic for its people, nothing more. Today, we become intruders, creative marauders with no real right to apply our paradigms in this stolen land. Therefore, a high level of abstraction is imperative.
