Kansas has tremendous beauty hard to imagine from the interstate (or from 30,000 feet in the air). In my first month there in 2021 while artist-in-residence at the Red Barn Studio Museum in Lindsborg, I came across this unexpected vista in a huge inland wetland. It's a way station for millions of migratory birds each year and it's spectacular. My work is beholden to the many modernist and abstract photographers who conjured startling beauty from mundane sites and materials. Beauty without sentimentality is what I aim for.
