Clocked Grey Scale - Limited Edition 1 of 1 Photograph

The interposition of photography turns the real experience of time into a mechanical time-based visual experience. It not only extends the past into the future, but also segments time into frames. For example, in film, one second of lived experience is divided into 24 individual frames, segmented spatially. My piece, Clocked Grey Scale illustrates a relation between time and photography. I used a darkroom timer to expose silver gelatin paper. All the material used in the making of the piece is from traditional photographic systems. The longer the exposure is, the darker the image will become. The gray scale that is produced by variations of time has reference to the Zone System, which both uses calculations of time to make exact photographic exposures and uses photographic procedures to accurately render variations of time.
