Constructional No.1, V4 in 3D - Limited Edition of 1 Photograph

Constructional No.1, V4 was a finalist in The Nillumbik Art Prize 2021 and the Wyndham Art Prize 2020. The process that I use is one I began to develop back in 2011 and have been refining ever since. It is a reductive process that begins with a foundation photo, where the main subject is isolated using a set of rules that deconstruct it into many base layers. Personal aesthetics continue the process by using multiple copies of the base layers, at the same time incorporating contemporary post-processing methods. It is only through this method that a new image emerges that is not predetermined. Based upon its own content, the image belongs not within the limited borders of traditional photography but that of “DeConstructed Photography”. The result is an undetermined image based only on its original data that is bright, colourful, kaleidoscopic, and Rorschach in nature. The digital process can take up to three months, (working on it 5 days, for around 4 hours a day) to complete due to its complexity of multiple layers (average 70), masks, blending modes, and the inter-relationship of each one. Once the master file is completed, I reapply some of the initial rules to finish off the process. The physical process of deconstruction is a lengthy technique as well, depending on the size and complexity of the image. For example, the large 95 x 95cm Constructional No.1, Version 1, took approximately 170 hours to complete from creating the templates to hand cutting up to nine layers/ photos and mounting each layer. My photographic artworks are labours of love, but I could not and would not do it any other way.
