About The Artwork

Pashupatinath Temple Complex in Kathmandu, Nepal, is a pious Hindu site of ongoing cremations. Family members assemble and witness the conversion of their beloved to ashes, on a sheltered parapet over the lugubrious and shallow Bagati River, which is where the ashes end up. It started raining very hard within minutes of my arrival, but fortunately, a young shop owner offered me an umbrella. There was no restriction on photography other than the arthritis in my right elbow, since my left arm held the umbrella. The heavy rain lent this view of the smokey funeral pyres a very apt mournfulness. Available on Kodak Endura (metallic) paper, mat paper, and (frameless) aluminum (different price and shipping. Contact artist through Saatchi for info). Inscribed with title, signed and numbered on verso, with certificate of edition number.

Shipping & Returns

A photographer since age 13, I've always felt rooted in nature, which continues to astonish me. More recently I've branched out into virtual reality, political and social documentary work. I'm a devotee of Cartier-Bresson, and SebastiĆ£o Salgado, but also Alex Webb, Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark and Jan Saudek. The truths that I like to tell about nature have a strong component of awe, either in grandeur or in delicacy. I'm always on the lookout for natural metaphors and try to infuse a certain amount of my work, especially the virtual pieces, with humor. (Photo of me by Harry Marples)
