About The Artwork
This art work is from an exhibition held at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney (RBGS). It was the result of many nights spent in the gardens after they were officially closed to the public - photographing (using a medium format camera and film) the Significant Trees of the RBGS. I provided my own lighting, whereby I paint light onto the subject in order to draw out the personality of the tree. I hope viewers will witness an alternative view of the tree - a view that could even be perceived as sacred. I chose photography because I want viewers to witness the real tree, but with an altered perception As an eco or environmental artist I hope to encourage people to think differently about the natural world, in order to protect it. The image will be printed on archival artist quality paper. The image measure 80cm x 65 cm and will be surrounded by a border of white, measuring 6 cm on each side - making the total size of the print 92cm x 77cm.

For the past 20 years I have focused on Trees, a subject I was drawn to for the magnitude of their environmental significance and their universal, pan-religious symbolic importance.I illuminate the natural world both physically and metaphorically. With light I paint a ‘portrait’ of the tree and capture a moment in a tree’s life.I have done this work in many countries around the world. Darkness is a part of vision - it can frame something without destroying it. Through framing the natural world with darkness the specificity of that world is revealed.
