VIEW IN MY ROOM

Photography, Digital on Paper

In the blue space of my mind's eye, I see. Every time a thought is conjured up, a vision is seen or a memory evoked, I feel my scalp tingling. I feel tiny little 'pops' go off in my mind as the connections are made, sometimes in a slow rhythm and at other times at lightning fast speeds. Electroconvulsive is how I envision the mind works, shrouded in its enigmatic ways. This photograph is a single image as seen in camera - a combination of techniques using strobes that freeze as well as capture continuous motion.

Dreamer. Stargazer. All about the visuals. I see the world with the eyes of a dreamer, a stargazer. I see everything as being magical, intense and bursting with universal truth. My life, and my journey with photography is a constant state of battle within myself to capture that as a clear and irrefutable image. I photograph to give myself strength, and I photograph to explore all the things I am afraid of. My photography is graphic in nature, bursting with the joy of vibrant colours. I see the beautiful in both the ordinary and the extraordinary. I photograph abstract thoughts and emotions. I am a dreamcatcher. I like big prints and patterns that engulfs viewers. Evoking in them the feeling of being a tiny speck in the universe, a part of a bigger story - but not react with cynicism or reel under such a thought. This is done by presenting a combination of beauty and mysticism to the viewer. Sometimes it's sharing a romantic, heart felt longing to be part of something bigger. Other times it is to give a lonely soul looking to belong, looking and looking for inspiration a chance to unknowingly to find the beauty within themselves that they have forgotten to see. I want my photographs to embrace the viewer in a strange sort of comfort, like a hug without a hug. Or a lingering kiss a lover places on her beloved, unwilling to part. Large photographs have a way of imparting a sense of belonging; people find connections when through the single action of engaging with something so profound in size. The sense of belonging comes not from viewing the image. It comes from viewing the image together - being able to look to either sides and find other tiny lonely souls taking it all in. In this case, photographs are a medium meant to "hold space” - much like how calm music for meditation are mediums to find peace and calm. I hope to create connections without relying on exchange of words - mine or the viewers. Speaking with a voice is one of the hardest things I have sought to do and is still something I struggle with on a daily basis. That's why, I want my art to facilitate connection in a safe space without needing to put a voice to the loneliness we struggle with. The images in my photographs come from the depths of my dreams, reflecting my own personal desire to seek and make connections. I want to be able to hold the viewer’s hand and say, 'it’s okay', just like how I tell a little version of myself in my head during the bad times.
