I’ve always been drawn towards live shows. That’s why I bought my first camera. In the 70s I shot a lot of amateur theatre and live rock. As for many young people of our generation, rock played a big part of my life. I was self-taught at the time. Meeting the photographers Jean-Pierre Leloir, and then Robert Doisneau in the 80s, reinforced my attachment to photography (especially of live shows), and raised the question of what is real in a different way : photographing something real is staging something you have invented, producing subjective reality. That’s what rock was : recreating a version of my reality using energy as my raw material. Apart from the big stars of the previous generation, most of the '75s were kids. Just kids photographed by a kid. It was time that made them icons. Interview with Claudine Roméo, philosopher

Evelyne Coutas lives and works in Paris. She studied architecture and sculpture at l’École nationale des Beaux- Arts de Paris. In 1983, Coutas introduced photography into her work, using light and the photosensitive properties of the silver halide process to question the representation of reality within photography. Her first photographic work, “La chambre obscure” (“The Darkened Room”) – a series of photograms created in the moonlight of her bedroom – inspired her to explore further aspects of the medium. Combining experimentation with light and atypical photographic techniques while exploring her unique creative expression, Coutas’ images poetically question the delicate relationship between form and substance.
