Green Gables; A Coloring of Memories by Erika Masterson Photographic Artist In this project I revisit life in the late 1800’s for young ladies. These images depict the feminine beauty, refined sensibilities and daily activities that I imagined their lives were. I was inspired to do this series the moment I stepped into the Queen Anne Style home in Melbourne, Florida build in 1896. I am fascinated with old and historic homes and it made the perfect setting for my series with its southern charm. I am fond of the “way things used to be” as far as women taking pleasure in their work as a homemaker and the joys of being a young lady. It was the perfect setting for all my antique collectables that I have cherished over the years. I also have a large collection of vintage dresses that were perfect for the series. The mood of the images is inspired by Dutch painter Hammershoi. I love the simplicity and lighting of his work.

Artist Statement With my photographs, I hope to evoke an awareness of one’s own journey through our natural longing to connect with nature. That connection is what I seek to bring into existence in my images, where “inner self” is un-veiled through vulnerability. The layering of my images, portraits blended with natural elements, embodies that divine connection. My photography is both a window and a mirror, allowing me to explore life’s intricacies through my camera’s lens, revealing moments of raw beauty and revelation. Each of my series tells a story, whether it’s affirmations of new beginnings, a depiction of vulnerability and innocence, the contrasts between light and dark, or our human nature and aspects of the spiritual. As I share my own personal insights rooted in my faith, my photographs become transcendent visual statements that express my concerns by addressing notions of inner and outer beauty, strength and fragility and the ever-ongoing passage of time. My images invite the viewer to make a connection, to dive beneath the surface to discover what’s there.
