According to the Theory of Special (Restricted) Relativity, “in a moving system time passes at a speed 60% slower with respect to a system at rest.” This is verified when it is measured in terms of the speed of light. Every physicist will tell you that the effects of relativity are not perceived by the human eye … In this sense photography can help us because it is produced using light, and can be considered our own instrument of measurement. I imagine two people drawing closer to each other after having lived separately for such a long time and in different places. In the place where they meet again their ‘timing’ will now correspond; they cross each other’s paths, seek each other’s company and meet up. I wonder whether the magic they experience is due to a sensation that in a sudden, fleeting moment the personal flow of time coincides, and there is an encounter between two separate ‘times’. If I have the possibility to observe this effect in light years, I want to believe I can perceive it in a gesture that lasts a fraction of a second. However, at that point it will no longer be a mathematical certainty but probably just a feeling. What should I do? Shall I trust the sensation or not? … Well, unless my reasoning changes in the flow of time … Paper size 16,5X23,4 in Photographic fine art UltraChrome inkjet, paper made of 100% cotton fibre, acid free. Filippo Bordin was born in Padua in northern Italy in 1977. He began studying painting at high school and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and also in Venice. In the year 2000 he began working for one of the oldest studios in Italy that specialise in industrial architecture. He worked on a project for the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities, producing a series of images of frescoes and architectural works, using 13x18 film. He has also worked as a photographer for artists and designers such as Cleto Munari, Andrea Bianconi and Arthur Duff. In the advertising sector he has collaborated with international fashion groups and sports organisations. Filippo has always dedicated a lot of time to studying the history of art and artistic genres and over the last seventeen years has concentrated mainly on photography. In some of his works there is a predominant effort to demonstrate by means of a particular use of light the effects of the 'Special Theory of Relativity' in everyday life. In others works, by placing objects in the foreground and presenting them in a rather unusual way, he focuses on the effects people's choices and actions may have on objects that surround us in our day to day life and leaves the observer to reflect on the results. His maniacal interest in the quality of light, colours and contrast remains steadfast right up to the final stages of his work, during which he uses high quality materials and modern photographic printing techniques.
