About The Artwork

On a 'human fractal' of Viktor Rybas, a pioneer artist in creating photographic portraits with laser lighting since 2006. Linear fractal portraits, scientifically speaking, are made of tracks left by laser beams on the surface of objects. The author visualizes human feelings by generating two-dimensional stochastic fractals. A laser beam is a tool used by the artist to illuminate the object, following an invisible connection between him and the photography´s object like some kind of a feedback. The beam always focuses on the details that seem the most interesting to the artist. Besides, the artist becomes his own tool for artwork creation, acting as a generator of fractals using his visual perception and body motility. The artist´s subconscious acts like "the variable z", typical of fractal formulas describing live natural processes. The feedback is very similar to the cyclic iteration in the construction of stochastic fractals. A laser beam is guided by the artist to reveal the object in the dark. A laser spot moving on the surface expands into a line, and the artist gradually unveils what is hidden by darkness. Then his perception (as well as the camera sensor) put together pieces of information to get a minimal idea about the image. An essential feature of this feedback mechanism is that the perception stops sending requests on the object´s illumination when it gets at least a slight idea about it. If this space is not lit and the eye does not see anything, the brain tries to find a way to direct the laser light source to this point in space through the artist´s motility. Therefore, in the end, we see a completely unusual, but recognizable image. It looks more like a hand-drawn graphics. But instead of pencil movements, Victor Rybas uses laser lights. This laconic technique brings precise and impressive results. Looking at the photos, we can see the essence of things, and easily understand their properties (age, gender, social status and occupation). Viktor Rybas’s linear photographic technique reveals unexpected and hardly visible individual features of depicted persons. Having limited the perception of the object’s form, the artist has expanded the picture by other ways of expression and extra features that previously couldn’t be revealed neither by text, nor technical means.

Victor Rybas is a pioneer in creating photographic portraits with laser lighting. He found how to make photo masterpieces without natural or artificial light, but in full darkness with non-conventional laser lighting. Linear fractal portraits, as the author names his artworks, visually consist of multiple tracks which laser rays leave on the surface of an object, outlining the relief and helping to display its shape that is created only in our visual perception. Looking at the photos, we can see the essence of things and people and easily understand the person, their occupation and abilities. This technique produces precise and impressive results.
