http://www.jenshaas.com Jens Haas is an expatriate artist who divides his time between Manhattan and remote regions in the Alps. He is inspired by both the structure of things and their surfaces—like the similarity between shades-of-grey in cities and at high altitude. Haas started out in news and documentary photography. Still, from the beginning he was interested simply in the image itself. His work tells stories about cityscapes, landscapes, and people. New projects have taken him to the sea, especially the Mediterranean, land of Odyssean travels and recent tragedy. Haas has been using all sorts of cameras and over time his work has become increasingly screen-based. Whatever the nature of the initial recordings, they are only the beginning of the image. Some turn into drawings, others morph into what could be mistaken for lithography. This process, for Haas, is a way of seeing more, a way of both discovering more about the world and keeping it at bay.
