About The Artwork
I captured this image of my nephew Finn, shortly before his voice 'broke'. His sweet, piping, (childish) soprano voice was 'other-worldly': eerily, hauntingly, beautiful. It lead me to a reflection on the erstwhile lives and fate(s) of the 'Castrati' (those young boys chosen for the quality/purity of their voice). I love Fin's unabashed look of wide-eyed trust in this shot - and even though the following sentiment is a hypothetical notion? I'm ineffably grateful that this boy was born into an era (and a country) in which his natural development is not/has not been stymied.
