About The Artwork

Fleur Noir I, a limited edition art print, is a botanical study of a dahlia and part of the Fleur Noir series, which Paul has created using the chiaroscuro lighting technique. Italian for “light-dark”, chiaroscuro is a method that has been used by painters and other artists for hundreds of years to suggest drama and suspense. The series title Fleur Noir, or “dark flower”, plays on the term Film Noir and is partly inspired by that classic genre, where mystery and drama is evoked by hard light, dark shadows and strong contrasts. Just for a moment, like a character in a ‘noir’ film, the flower has stepped out of the dark shadows, into a pool of light.
