I came across this wrapped building in the historic center of the city of Montpellier, situated in the south of France. The building, covered with a gigantic tarpaulin to protect the surroundings from the dust of the renovation work in progress inside the structure, looks almost like a piece of 'street art' -- or an homage to the famous artist-duo Christo & Jean-Claude, who specialized in covering iconic buildings and structures around the world with even bigger, custom-made tarpaulins to 'make them disappear' and thereby focus the viewers' attention onto the suddenly 'absent' objects. The image is part of the project "French Connections", which is made up of pictures taken mostly (but not exclusively) in the southern part of France. The 'look' of the photos resembles those of old pictures taken with bulky and very heavy analogue cameras near the beginning of photography -- the latter, by the way, being to a good part created by French inventors Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre. This series is meant as an homage to these two men as well as to other Frenchmen that contributed ground-breaking work in the development of modern photography. The images in the series "French Connections" include intentionally unsharp areas to closely resemble or at least serve as a reference to the images produced by early photographic equipment (e.g. wet plate technique). Medium: Archival pigment print on UV-resistant, premium photo paper. Light-fast for more than 200 years. Each print has an integrated white border around the actual image for easy framing and is part of a limited edition series of 18 prints (plus 2 artist proofs), 15 of which are available on Saatchi Art. Signed and numbered on verso. Not mounted. Other than the indicated size, individual sizes (larger and smaller) as well as different materials (e.g. acrylic glass, Alu-Dibond etc.) can be provided upon request. Please contact me under:

Germany
Born in Germany. Got his first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, on his 6th birthday from his parents. Ever since, he has been hooked on photography. Even while pursuing his studies of Art History and Literature, his true passion has always been the creative process itself -- the actual making of an artwork, instead of only writing or discussing about it. After his student years in France and California, he relocated to Berlin, Germany in the early 1990ies, right after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1998, he returned to southern California before moving back to Berlin in 2004. Between 2009 and 2013 working and living in Hong Kong. From there moving on to the Provence region in the south of France. Currently living with his wife Sarah, a painter, in the Montpellier area. Some thoughts on the images seen on Saatchi Art: “I first define a project and then create a series of photos for this project. The style of photography has to suit the topic and is therefore different each time. For example, for the series “South of California”, I used a colorful style that reflects the bright and beautiful light, which exists in southern California and Mexico. For “French Connections”, I used a different, vintage kind of look as this series is also meant to be a hommage to French inventors like Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre, who are considered the creators of photography, and other Frenchmen that contributed ground-breaking work in the development of modern photography and film (e.g. the brothers August and Louis Lumière for motion pictures).”
