About The Artwork

Layers of textural juxtaposition in this monochrome photograph evoke the unique terrain—territorial and cultural—of this formerly Ottoman region of southwestern Serbia. Immediately evident is the contrast between the chiaroscuro of the tilled soil and the sweeping vista of cumulus and cirrus clouds. With patience more subtle couplets emerge, such as the partnering of laboriously softened topsoil with, in the upper left, the region’s characteristic topography—more stone than loam. These are echoes the farmer’s raw toil. Sod and soil; hand-forged fences and electrical lines; these and other pairings cascade to fuse formal composition with evocations of labor, regional tradition, infrastructure, and craft. This is from a limited edition of 30 prints, signed and numbered by the artist. Printed in Giclee process on Hahnemühle Torchon paper with aqueous ink. Torchon is an acid-free, all-organic, white archival paper with a slight texture. The pigment-based ink provides exceptional, museum-quality longevity and pairs with Torchon paper to deepen and enrich the blacks of monochrome photography. The photograph is printed with a border of approximately 2 inches, which serves to visually bound the photograph and allow for framing that displays the entire artwork. It also serves as space for the artist’s signature and edition number. This border is included in the stated dimension of the photograph.

It was his work as a photographer that originally led Jovius to train as an architect and, subsequently, as an historian of architecture. He is a professor of architectural history in the United States, and his academic travel and research allow him to maintain a practice in fine art photography with the world’s constructed landscapes as his primary subject. His artwork addresses the palimpsestic character of urban and structural form, the subtle uncanny in architecture and urban experience, and the entwined and unsteady relationship between our formulations of the natural and of the artificial. He has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions in New York and elsewhere, and his photographs have been featured in hundreds of publications.
