About The Artwork

To experience and photograph the Ganga Aarti (Obeisance to Ganges) at Har-Ki-Pauri at Haridwar was sublime. Ganga Aarti is a daily ritual on the banks of the river Ganges in northern India. As dusk falls, pilgrims, tourists and local priests gather at the riverbank to worship the Ganges river, fondly known locally as ‘Ganga-ji’. Earthen lamps (Diyas) and flowers are set afloat amid chanting of mantras and bell chimes, in a serene ambiance. No amount of words can accurately describe the actual experience, but this is as close to the real thing as I could capture with the dual constraints of low light and hand held photography.

I have been a photographer for over twenty-five years. I started photography in high school using an ‘Agfa Click III’ and my father’s manual ‘Yashica Lynx 5000’ camera. When I graduated with a commerce degree from Bombay University in 1986, I was hooked to taking pictures. So strong was my love for photography that it was a natural progression to a full time profession. Besides working for leading Indian and international clients, I have worked as a photographer for nine months in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on assignments at Saudi Aramco in 1990. Along with commercial photography, I work on many personal projects simultaneously. My subjects include nature, wildlife, landscapes, festivals, historical architecture, people at work, portraits and abstracts. I am drawn to the play of light on my subjects. The right quality of light is my primary ingredient for a good shot. Next is the subject. I have traveled extensively in India, Mauritius and United States for personal projects, and photographed people, historical places and the wilderness. My digital stock collection exceeds 20,000 images. I now exhibit my fine art work regularly in various locations. My first Solo show was in Dec. 2013 at Mumbai’s prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery was very well appreciated by visitors and art buyers. I experiment with many new mediums to present my artworks in more innovative ways. I make my prints on a range of materials like paper, canvas, metal and glass.
