Gate Pass explores correlations between private and public gestures of familial protection as interpreted through the fixture of home gates. Nicole Rademacher examined ideas of privacy and protection through interviews and observations of the people who lived behind or passed through the gates in the Central Province of Kenya while on a 3-month residency; her research revealed a shared need for security and the lengths we go to achieve a sense of safety and stability. Gate Pass documents these impeding physical boundaries through photography and video, exploring the daily occurrences both inside and outside the gates, while revealing connections of intimacy and formality, alienation and belonging, security and vulnerability.

As a multi-ethnic adoptee, I have spent my life carefully observing, considering material such as gesture, space, and object as cultural artifacts in my largely, image-based practice. My need to observe and investigate led me to travel to many countries and immerse myself in diverse cultures, looking for the familiar. Now, after returning to my home country, I am facilitating workshops with the adoptee community: building works collaboratively and creating a space to discuss meanings of everyday movements and objects, and examining the relationships between these bits and pieces as a way of describing alienation, belonging, intimacy, and identity. BIO Nicole Rademacher received a BFA (2004) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MFA (2008) from Alfred University. She held an artist residency at La Cité Nationale des Arts (2010), and was a recipient of a Regional Artist Project Grant, North Carolina Arts Council (2012). Rademacher has exhibited and screened her work worldwide including Transmediale, Harvestworks, re-new Digital Art Forum, LOOP Video Art Festival, the Gallery of the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, the Chilean Consulate (NYC), and at LAX Airport. Rademacher currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California with her husband and toddler.
