Hands and Nautilus - Limited Edition of 20 Photograph

I started a project shooting hands in different poses and with objects and was playing around with this half nautilus when I held it in the way shown here, so all I needed was a suitable hand and a natural location for a background. This was shot during the film days on medium format film with a Mamiya RX67, a great camera with beautiful lenses. A friend of my wife at the time offered to do the shot so we went to an area I knew near the sea in Sydney that had good sandstone rocks for potential backgrounds. I am a great admirer of Ed Weston's work, in particular his shots of nautilus shells and bodies. I hadn't realised that this image resembles a head and neck, and is symbolic of the experience of inner discovery.
