About The Artwork

Sisyphus - a figure in Greek mythology - was condemned by Zeus to forever roll a boulder up a mountain only to have it roll back down and make him carry it back up again for all eternity. This photo pays homage to the boulder that endured this punishment along with Sisyphus. My art takes me into a world that at first sight appears to exist, but then reveals itself to deviate from reality and enter a world of fantasies. This photograph is part of Misbegotten Places, the series where I photograph small dioramas that I build from other photographs taken throughout my travels. Façades, windows, doors and columns all appear as they might in a real world, but their ultimate construct is false. The architectural elements have been assembled and paired with objects so as to alter reality, resulting in chaos and confusion. With proper camera angles and careful lighting, these models take on a life of their own. These works fill me with a sense of disorienting wonderment: I ask myself where are these places?—what is real ?—how do they exist? They are indeed misbegotten. I’ve always been a still life photographer, and as such I’m obsessed with controlling every aspect of an image. In this work I create buildings, design porticos, insert windows and build a world to my liking from unrelated architectural elements. As it comes together, the resulting surreal imagery further stokes my imagination and guides me deeper into the process. Each piece goes through several iterations, finally letting me know it’s finished when I feel certain that it’s a space I’d visit with a sense of awe. Editions are limited to 10 prints. These photos are also available in different sizes as framed prints, mounted aluminum prints and canvas prints. Contact curator@saatchiart.com

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
