About The Artwork

I Just Want to be Held sees a seductive female form sprouting cactus thorns.  The photo examines the subject’s desire for intimacy and her physical inability to receive it.  Did these spikes grow involuntarily or as a form of invited self protection?   As the discord and confusion between these two poles plays out, we are lured into a dilemma about whether it is ever possible to achieve what we desire or does desire exist as an end in itself incapable of being fulfilled or satiated? Cactus spines were physically attached to the body, not added with Photoshop. This photo was exhibited in the 2015 Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Edition of 50

Through sculpture, photography and drawings, the work of Deborah Brown continues to explore the ego, materialism, sexuality and desire. Underpinning this exploration of desire is an ongoing investigation into the objectification of the body and its functions in reflecting emotional and psychological fragmentation. Brown is a Southern California artist who has been living in the UK for the past 17 years. She showed extensively in the 90’s and was collected largely by Eileen & Peter Norton amongst many others. Her work generates great interest and has received broad critical acclaim and is currently in 6 museum permanent collections. Brown was also the featured artist for the Barney’s New York Christmas windows. After a break in exhibiting, in 2016 she had a solo show at Jason Vass Gallery, Los Angeles and reemerged with a powerful new body of work, developed over the previous decade. Since then, she continues to create in her Wilshire countryside studio.
