About The Artwork

I took this image while visiting Heron Island, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia. This shipwreck is used as a breakwater for the island. We took a small trip out on the water one afternoon and the storm clouds rolled in. Fortunately we were at the end of our little outing when I took this photo. Soon after the rain started falling, and the air remained warm and salty. History of the ship HMCS (later HMAS) Protector was commissioned and purchased by the South Australian Government in 1884 for 65,000 pounds. She served in the Boxer Rebellion, WWI and WWII. In July 1943 the US Army requisitioned her and on her way up to Papua New Guinea she collided with a tug boat off Gladstone. She was purchased for ten pounds and sunk off Heron Island as a breakwater.
