About The Artwork

During my family's escape from France in late 1942 in the midst of the Holocaust they crossed over the Pyrenees into Spain. There my dad and uncle were sent separately to the border of Portugal where they reunited with their parents at the train station. There was a bakery filled with delicious pastries. The children were thrilled as they had experienced rationing at home and of course ate too much which didn't sit well!! This piece from the series, “Is It Safe,” utilizes photographs of family members who survived or were killed during the Holocaust as narrative backdrops. I use dollhouse size––1-inch to 1-foot scale–– dolls in my art practice to retell visual stories, echoing the way that I was told tales of war and escape as a child on my grandfather’s knee. Fascinated since childhood by dollhouses, I was particularly influenced by English children’s book illustrations like Rumer Godden’s The Dolls House. They provided me with a refuge from a noisy and disruptive household, and became an early influence for how I now retell and re-narrativize my life. The backdrops used here are a visual memory of my extended family. Many of these photographs are newly recovered. I had never seen an image of a woman from my paternal side of the family. These photographs instill a profound feeling of sadness, while empowering my creative work through the active insertion of and engagement with familial female erasure. The dolls speak to issues such as: childhood, fear, race, politics, and abandonment.
