About The Artwork

Icarus. Exuvia of a Four-spotted Chaser, Libellula quadrimaculata. This image was the title piece of a collection of 14 images symbolizing the myth of Icarus that is found Ovid's Metamorphosis. There were 13 images in the collection, organized in a mosaic clock pattern. This was the title piece. The photos were hanging in a friends office, but one day I visited and this one was missing. The reason was that somebody in the office was afraid of it and called it a dead bug. It's not a dead bug or creature from outer space. It's the exoskeleton left behind when a dragonfly emerges to fly. Ovid's Metamorphosis isn't just stories, it's myth. Myth tries to explain human condition or life around us. In this story, Icarus is trapped and to escape, Daedalus creates artificial wings for them to fly. Although the escape was successful, it was also catastrophic. It is the risk we take when we seek to transform or escape the frame of an older life. The photo was taken with a macro lens in natural light on white paper. If you look closely there is very fine membrane over where the eyes of the dragonfly once were. It's extremely fragile as life is.
